ALABAMA STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS FUNDS Alabama State Council on the Arts, in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts, awarded two grants to Mobile International Festival this year. The Arts in Education grant of $2,600.00 provides teach-ins of the Yoruba culture from West Africa to six elementary schools (two in Baldwin County and four in Mobile County) and two middle schools in Mobile County. This is the third year ASCA and MIF are collaborating on this educational outreach program. Mrs. Malvina Holloway takes the students on a trip to West Africa where the Yoruba culture originated. She uses a slide presentation and an actual Yoruba artifact for her show-and-tell. The art of African batik-making is the hands-on-art project. The second part of this grant is a free field trip for 200 students from Booth Elementary School in Irvington. This will provide the students a trip around the world in one day learning about the different cultures from 70 nations. The second ASCA grant
is for the Community Arts at $7,500.00. This grant allows the festival
to continue its excellent entertainment programming that includes guest
performers from different cultures. The performances of the Matsuriza
Japanese Traditional Taiko Drummers from Orlando, FL; Kenya Safari Acrobats
from Greensboro, NC; Mithril from Mobile, AL; and Noklae Singing Children
Group from Chiang Mai, Thailand are made possible through the grant from
ASCA and the National Endowment for the Arts. |
